Melanie and Destry’s Ashley Castle wedding felt like stepping into a completely different world for the day.
Yes, it was July in Arizona. Yes, it was hot. Very hot.
But The Ashley Castle is one of those venues where that doesn’t mean sacrificing beautiful photography or spending your entire wedding day outside. Between the dramatic bridal suite, indoor castle architecture, shaded spaces, courtyard, gardens, and grand ballroom, we had plenty to work with before heading outdoors once the light—and temperature—started getting a little more forgiving.
Melanie and Destry chose not to do a first look, which meant most of their portraits happened after the ceremony. That timing ended up working beautifully because it brought us straight into one of my favorite things about photographing this venue: golden hour turning into blue hour.

A Summer Wedding at The Ashley Castle
Summer weddings in Arizona require a little strategy.
When the temperature is high, having beautiful indoor spaces matters just as much as having a pretty ceremony location—and The Ashley Castle gives you both.
The venue’s interior is ornate and dramatic, with crystal chandeliers, marble floors, stone details, painted walls, and towering ceilings. Outside, the property includes gardens, fountains, a gazebo, and a dedicated ceremony space.
So even in July, we didn’t need to force hours of outdoor photography into the hottest part of the afternoon.
Instead, we could use the interiors early in the day and save more of the outdoor portraits for later.

One of My Favorite Bridal Suites in Arizona
The bridal suite at The Ashley Castle is easily one of my favorite getting-ready spaces in Arizona.
It feels dramatic, romantic, and very old-world—almost like a scene from a storybook castle.
There is so much character already built into the room that bridal portraits don’t need much added to them.
Before the ceremony, we photographed Melanie throughout the suite while she was completely dressed and ready. Since she and Destry weren’t doing a first look, this gave us time to create beautiful bridal portraits without taking away from their time together later.
And honestly, when the room already gives Beauty and the Beast energy, you use it.

A Romantic Courtyard Wedding Ceremony
Melanie and Destry saved their first look at each other for the ceremony.
There is always something special about that decision because all of the anticipation builds toward one moment: the walk down the aisle.
Their ceremony took place outside in the courtyard, surrounded by the castle architecture and garden setting.
The Ashley Castle’s outdoor ceremony space incorporates wrought-iron details, draping, and chandeliers, which gives the ceremony a more romantic feel than a typical outdoor Arizona setup.
Once Melanie and Destry were officially married, we moved into family photos and then finally got to photograph the two of them together.

Family Photos + Golden-Hour Wedding Portraits
Because Melanie and Destry skipped a first look, all of their family photographs and couple portraits happened after the ceremony.
And at The Ashley Castle, I actually loved where that timing took us.
Once family photos were finished, the harshest part of the afternoon light was behind us and we could move into couple portraits as the sun dropped.
Golden hour here is beautiful.
The stone architecture, greenery, courtyard, and warm Arizona light all work together without the portraits feeling like the typical desert wedding.
It gives you something softer and more romantic.

Why I Love Blue Hour at The Ashley Castle
And then I like to keep going.
The transition from golden hour into blue hour is one of my favorite times to photograph at The Ashley Castle.
As the warm light disappears, the sky cools down and the castle lights begin to stand out. The whole property takes on a completely different mood—more dramatic, romantic, and slightly cinematic.
You can create two very different portrait galleries within a relatively short amount of time.
Warm and glowing.
Then cool and moody.
That variety is one of the reasons I love photographing weddings here.

Cocktail Hour in the Courtyard
While we finished portraits, guests enjoyed cocktail hour outside in the courtyard and patio area.
The indoor-outdoor setup works especially well here because guests can move between spaces instead of being committed to sitting outside in the Arizona heat all evening.
By the time portraits were finished, Melanie and Destry could head back inside, cool off, and get ready for the reception.

A Grand Ballroom Reception
Then everyone moved into the ballroom.
And if the bridal suite gives storybook-castle energy, the Grand Ballroom really commits to it.
The space has 30-foot ceilings, crystal chandeliers, marble floors, painted walls, stone turrets, and detailed statuary throughout the room.
It honestly feels a little like walking into the ballroom scene from Beauty and the Beast.
For a summer Arizona wedding, it also means the reception can feel grand and immersive without asking guests to spend the entire evening outside.
Melanie and Destry celebrated with dinner, dancing, and all of their favorite people inside one of the most distinctive reception spaces in the Phoenix area.

Why I Love Ashley Castle Weddings
The Ashley Castle is completely different from most of the venues I photograph around Arizona.
Instead of desert, mountains, or modern architecture, you get something much more old-world and romantic.
For photography, I love the amount of variety: dramatic indoor spaces, gardens, the courtyard, stone architecture, golden-hour light, blue-hour portraits, and a ballroom that doesn’t need much added to make an impact.
And for a summer wedding in Arizona, the interior spaces are a huge advantage.
You don’t have to choose between keeping everyone comfortable and having beautiful photographs.
The venue even currently offers a dedicated summer wedding package built around Arizona’s hotter months.
